This review contains spoilers for Iron Heart and the Red Queen series.
In my book review for War Storm, I said that I wanted to explore Evangeline and Elane’s stories and relationship further. I actually wasn’t expecting a novella about them!
I think this novella was important to read, with all the political stuff that went on in it. I think it was also like a final statement that Evangeline — and Ptolemus — have changed. I think Evangeline is possibly the character who had the most character development in the whole series. This novella made it really apparent. Like, when Evangeline decided to make that final statement to seperate herself from her mother, that was cool.
I’m slightly concerned about Elane and Evangeline’s relationship. I really liked it in the main series, but in Iron Heart I felt a bit like Evangeline wasn’t listening to Elane at all? Maybe it’s just Evangeline’s stubborn personality, but I just felt like Evangeline seemed to think she was more important than Elane. Which is weird, because in the main series she was definitely not like that. Anyway.
It was cool to see Davidson and Carmadon again in this novella. They’re both cool and funny, and they seem to both be genuinely good people. Most of the time.
So yeah. I think it was great to see Evangeline, Elane and Ptolemus settling in and finding their place. They all deserve it.
