I decided to read this book because it looked interesting, and I’m very glad that I read it. It was beautifully Australian, and it gave me a sense of nostalgia. This book seemed like type of text that school would make you study. But in a good way, you know? It reminded me of Catching Teller Crow, which some people in my year did actually have to study.
As I said, this book was elegantly Australian. I think the general perception of Australia is “chill bogans with funny accents who drink beer, eat Vegemite and ride kangaroos to school” but there’s another side to Australia too. People often don’t take Australia seriously but our country is beautiful yet has a dark past — and I think that side of Australia was wonderfully explored in this book. There was an emphasis on the abundance of wildlife which I valued. And I realised that history class did actually teach me stuff when I finally saw some periods of Australian history reflected in characters’ stories.
The theme of grief was really well explored in the book. Obviously there was an emphasis on death. The writing style combined with the themes created a unique whimsical but dark vibe which I really liked. I think I really need to read more books written in verse!
This book was very much something I didn't know I wanted, you know? I really enjoyed the writing style and themes but I didn't expect I would. It was a really nice surprise.
I would very much recommend this book. It's actually kinda educational, and I think it offers a new perspective of life as an Australian.
Ok now that you know where I live don't stalk me down... be warned that Australia is an unforgiving and huge place. Beware of the drop bears. And snakes. My cousin nearly got bitten by a reticulated whipsnake the other week. But he didn't. Quote of the day: "you were just casually swimming with sharks?!" -F
The Art of Taxidermy by Sharon Kernot, 13+* ★★★★
*This age recommendation is only my opinion. Some younger people might feel comfortable reading this book, and some older people might not. That's fine, either way. Warning for low level gore, racist characters, death of family, a brief mention of self-harm and potentially upsetting themes.
