This book had been sitting on my shelf for literal years and I finally decided to read it!! I really really enjoyed it, and got about 80% through in about a day and a half — that’s a sign that I was really invested in it!
The book was, however, a lot heavier than I was expecting. There were a heap of adult themes in there, which personally I was mostly pretty ok with. However, there was one thing that happened which really triggered my ocd — so I ended up having a panic attack and had to stop reading for a day. It kinda sent me into an ocd relapse, so obviously that impacted on my overall enjoyment of the book. I definitely would have rated the book a lot higher if that one thing hadn’t happened.
But overall, I really did think that this book was engaging and well-written. Holly Jackson really wrote tension effectively and the conclusion was a big shock — that’s
a good thing. She planted red herrings all over the place and I was not expecting the mystery to end in the way it did. It was a sad ending though, and a bit freaky because I just did not see it coming.

I liked the concept of this book though, especially how the main character made a new friend and they solved the mystery together. Friendship yayyyyyyy!!!
I also very much related to the main character because she had a little brother (Josh) and he was written so accurately. Ah, little brothers. The family dynamic within Pip’s family was adorable to be honest; it made me really happy.
I was a bit torn about the fact that Pip kinda abandoned her whole personality over the course of the book. At least she acknowledged it, but I think it was a little unrealistic. Oh well. I liked how Pip’s awareness of her own sacrifices was emphasised though. I think that part was a good exploration of trauma and how it can change a person.
Overall, I am glad that I finally read this book. I’ve already started reading the sequel and I’m very curious about how it will go, since Pip is going to solve a completely different mystery in it. At the moment I’m thinking that a sequel isn’t quite necessary, but I guess I’ll see. I really hope that Ravi features strongly in the sequel/s because he is an angel.
Also by the way this book was like a very mature version of Friday Barnes ahahahahaha.

*This age recommendation is only my opinion. Some younger people might feel comfortable reading this book, and some older people might not. That's fine, either way. Warning for murder, death, discussions of sexual assault, blackmail, pet death, family member death, mentions of self-harm, mentions of suicide, racist characters, drug use, drink spiking, medium-level violence, bullying, cyberbullying, and potentially upsetting themes.
