Wow. So, if you’ve read my blog thingy about my feelings about Dear Evan Hansen in musical form (the original) then you’d know about how much it affected me. Which was a lot. The novel. I feel like, I kinda knew what would happen so it didn’t have such a big impact? Anyway, the novel had lots of little details that weren’t in the musical. And, well, by “little details”, I mean whole characters and situations.
Miguel. He is cool.
I feel like the novel kinda adds a lot more insight into who Connor really is. Like, it makes him more likeable. Not that he wasn’t likeable before. But like some of the things we learned about him in the novel kind of just gave him more... presence?
One thing I was a bit disappointed about was the fact that some of the songs from the musical weren’t too apparent in the novel. Like, some of the songs were directly quoted, but others just kind of... disappeared? (Pun intended, actually Disappear was one of those songs.)
Yeah. So. If you're a fan of the musical, definitely read it. And even if you aren't! It was a good book. Also sad. But, you know, of course it is.
Dear Evan Hansen the Novel by Val Emmich, Steven Levenson, Justin Paul, and Benj Pasek, 14+*
*This age recommendation is only my opinion. Some younger people might feel comfortable reading this book, and some older people might not. That's fine, either way. Warning for possibly upsetting themes such as suicide (the whole plot is kinda about this), swearing, sexual references, and drug references.
