I think I really need to figure out my thoughts right now, and since this blog is, like, either going to be viewed by Book People or nobody, I will publish them here. If my blog suddenly gets popular (oh, what an unrealistic dream), or even just viewed by someone other than me, maybe there are people out there who can relate. Maybe, I dunno.
If you have read the Shatter Me series/The Juliette Chronicles then you are probably either going to be laughing, shrugging, disapproving or sobbing after reading this. (NOTE: if you haven't read it, I suggest not reading this because spoilers, unless you're one of my friends who will never ever read anything like this, because of YouTube and Minecraft and Opinions, and don't care). I am only up to chapter fifty-nine of Unravel Me, which obviously means that an immense amount of things can still happen. Betrayal, heartbreak, love, anything, everything.
But, right now, I must confess that I am falling in love with another fictional character. Yep, another one.
Yep, Warner. Aaron Warner. My baby who is also, like, nineteen years old.
I know, all you Shatter Me readers are probably shaking your heads or laughing or crying, because there are still, like, seven books left. But let me rant. Then I can refer to this when I finish the series, dead.
Warner is like almost every book character I have ever loved, but all combined into one whole. And perfect, as Juliette sometimes not-so-subtly calls him. But not the flawless-perfect, he is far from that. But in a good way. His flaws are some of the things I love most about him. Let's list stuff about him, in the form of bullet points so that we don't have to worry about segues:
- He likes books and reading
- From what I can tell so far, he is like a super empath, in more ways than one
- He shows vulnerability when talking to Juliette or narrating
- But that vulnerability completely disappears in the presence of most other people
- He has a frickin' Shakespeare quote tattooed "across the very bottom of his torso"
- He, unlike other characters I know, doesn't focus on his own ego, contrary to how it may seem
- In fact, he doesn't really even have much of a big ego, he's humble
- He's a good hugger
- He's a quiet sufferer
- HE HAS DIMPLES
- He calls Juliette "love"
- His physical appearance is (help, I don't know how to say this, so let's resort to--) good? I mean, I guess some of you (non-existent blog-viewers) may have picked up that I am terrible at judging looks and don't really care for them, but I feel like his good looks (did I use that term correctly?) help to enhance his character.
- But, building on from that, when he takes his shirt off (nothing weird, I promise!) he is scarred. All over his back. This may be a metaphor for how he is, personality-wise. He is scarred, both physically and mentally, but he has to cover this up in the interest of the role that was forced upon him by his father.
- Similarly, he has tattoos that show his personality and interests. Again, this may be a metaphor for something similar, that when he is in his role of commanding Sector 45 or around his father, he cannot let his own true personality show through. But, stripped down -- whichever way you choose -- he does, in fact, have a personality, a vivid and lovable one at that. Though I don't yet know what the IGNITE tattoo means, or even what exactly the hell is empty and all the devils are here tattoo relates to, they show Warner for who he is. I assume.
- He isn't shameless, and is trusting but not too trusting. This is shown in the instance of the Jade Ring. Warner was kinda-sorta opening up to Juliette, but then he still kept secrets. I dunno why I find this a good character trait.
- He respects boundaries. When he didn't, it was not for his own benefit but his father's. Warner seems to understand Juliette and why she doesn't want him to do stuff, so he doesn't. I've especially seen this recently.
- He's still naïve, and doesn't think otherwise. He doesn't know he and Adam are brothers. He doesn't know a lot of things. And he doesn't pretend he knows everything.
- Lots of these traits are only displayed in certain situations, like around Juliette.
- I can relate to him.
I could continue the list for hours, but I should very much be asleep by now, so I will have to move along. If I went to sleep earlier, it would have taken me longer than 1:21am to get to sleep anyway. So HURRY UP IZZY.
What about Adam?
Yes, Adam is cool, but I just don't like him as much. I honestly feel like Juliette is walking on eggshells with him. It's as if he would burst out and yell at her if she displayed any signs of closeness to anyone other than him. I know that he is broken, and that he has plenty of good reasons to be flawed. But, I dunno, Warner is just better. Warner is almost the underdog?
Here's the part where it gets complicated. Though I don't think Adam and Juliette are in the best place together at the moment, I think that Juliette is feeling a responsibility to still love Adam. This responsibility has been imposed upon her by herself and by Adam and by people around them. I know she still loves him, and I know that Juliette and Adam's relationship is restricted at the moment.
Honestly, I'm almost scared for Adam that he is going to lose Juliette's romantic love to Warner. If that happens, I will most likely hate Juliette. But are they best for one another?
I now can see where Warner slowly fell in love with Juliette. At first, he liked her for her physical appearance, and dressed her in fancy clothes. But now, their bond has grown beyond that type of attraction. However, Adam and Juliette's relationship has nearly always been emotional, never solely based on physical attraction. I admire that about Juliette and Adam's relationship. However, I feel as though their bond has weakened ever since they got to Omega point. Are they best suited as lovers caught under the pressure of secrecy? It certainly seemed far more romantic then.
OH NO IT'S NEARLY 2AM. But I could write so much more... I have to do a concluding paragraph.
So, to give an answer -- though not exactly definite -- to this question. Adam or Warner for Juliette? I wish I could just yell "PLOT TWIST!" and ship Adam with Warner to make this easier, but I can't because that would be incest. So I have to make this decision.
Honestly, I feel like typing this up has really helped me to clear things up. When I started writing this post about two hours ago, I was infatuated with Warner and thought, "only the best for my narrator friend, Juliette" but now I'm kinda leaning the other way.
Adam and Juliette have a longer history together. And they loved each other before they even knew they could touch. Before they talked to one another, even. They are still willing to try to maintain their relationship, even though they're currently going through a bit of a rough patch. They still love each other. And to make my decision of Adam + Juliette Supreme even stronger, I want to mention that Adam would be completely heartbroken if Juliette left him for Warner. And, honestly, I would never forgive Juliette if she did that.
So yep. Juliette and Adam belong together. Not Juliette and Warner. But then who does Warner belong with?
Me.
It is now exactly 2:20am and I am going to severely regret staying up this late talking about fictional characters. But oh well. I'm not even going to read through this post before posting it, so if it's concerning then-- HOLY QUINT ERICKSON WHY IS IT 1306 WORDS LONG? DID I READ THAT RIGHT? NHDGCFNCFWFNJKDMKWJ I love you Warner.
We pay our respects to the Almighty Tahereh Mafi, because without her I would be asleep right now. And Warner wouldn't exist.
