Weapon - Book Review

I really enjoyed this book. Probably more than I did Whisper. Now I have a lot of things to say.
I feel like the series just got more and more exciting as it went on. Like, I stayed up until 3am last night because I just couldn’t put it down! And THE PLOT TWISTS. There were SO MANY. I feel like the entire book was just like one big plot twist.
Although it still reminded me of Shatter Me. My beloved.
Once again, it was really cool that it was set in Australia. I mean, my parents have literally gone on the ghost tour they mentioned in the book. I guess the familiar setting also helped me to connect with the book. And add context.
The ending was nice. It was very intense up until the last two or so chapters. I kinda liked that about this duology though. Even from the very start of it, there were barely any “nothing moments”. Things were always happening. I guess that made the book more intriguing.
In some ways this book felt like a bit of a mystery book. Like, there was foreshadowing everywhere and little clues and plot twists that all eventually added up in the end. I don’t think many things were left unsolved. Except… WHAT IS ENZO’S CODE NAME I WANNA KNOW.
The characters were pretty complex and likeable. Except the evil characters. I liked this book because it was really good at making me feel things for the characters. When characters betrayed others I was left shocked. And offended on their behalf.
The writing style in Weapon seemed a bit different to Whisper? I thought I was imagining that it seemed more Sarah J Maas-ish in Weapon. But turns out, Lynette Noni and Sarah J Maas seem to be pretty familiar with one another — they’re working on things together. Which is kinda weird and funny because it just so happens that I am reading Throne of Glass currently. Slowly but steadily (I’m nearly finished Tower of Dawn! 87.2% through at this point!).
Yeah. The sass displayed by some of the characters though. Like even when they’re not saying it aloud, some of the things the narrator (Alyssa) was saying we’re kinda funny.
Overall I think this book was pretty good. I would like to thank the friend who gave it to me. And I am going to recommend it to A.
The only thing is that I’m not sure how well the book dealt with trauma. Like, sure, the characters had other things to worry about. But sometimes the reactions were slightly unrealistic. And I think the “FoRgEt” thing was an effective way to kinda just brush traumas under the rug (is that an expression?) and avoid the impact they should have had on the characters.
But. Apart from that. I really don’t have anything to complain about. So yep. I got the first two Prison Healer books for Christmas/my birthday, so I guess now that I’ve read a Lynette Noni series and liked it, that will move further up on my TBR! I am gonna go recommend this to A now. And also go get the books (Empire of Storms and Kingdom of Ash, no more eBooks for the Throne of Glass series for me!) that I ordered that are currently sitting on my front porch. Haha.

Weapon by Lynette Noni, 13+*  ★ ★ ★.5

*This age recommendation is only my opinion. Some younger people might feel comfortable reading this book, and some older people might not. That's fine, either way. Warning for potentially upsetting themes, house fire, needles, some medium-level violence, sexual references, and abuse of power.
