Red Queen - Book Review

Yeah, so I started another popular book series. I actually started the Red Queen series because my friend, S, is reading it. Red Queen had been sitting unread on my bookshelf for years, so I finally decided that it was time to actually read it.
It is going to be very hard to review this book without spoiling anything. It was very good. Slightly stereotypical, but good. It reminded me of a mix of The Selection and, like, Whisper or something.
This book is quite well known for its plot twist. I find that when you know there's a plot twist coming, you start trying to figure it out.
I kinda did predict the plot twist in this book. It was still a shock when it happened, though -- I actually couldn't believe it and was so stunned. For those of you imaginary blog readers who have actually read Red Queen, I'd assume that you know what I mean when I say that I was kinda also disappointed that it happened.
I have a bunch of assessments at the moment, and one of them was to write a short dystopian story. Let me just say that I started planning and then realised that I was probably violating some copyright laws. It was basically Red Queen haha. Anyway, that story is now still a tiny bit RQ-ish but I based it off a song. I hate it :) it is terrible. But I will probably end up posting it on this blog anyway because I haven't posted any writing-stuff recently.
Anyway. I kinda like the fact that I can't decide whether or not I like some of the characters. It may be slightly frustrating but I think it is a sign of good writing.
I like the present-tense writing of the book. It was hard for me to write in past-tense when I was writing my short story, haha.
As always, it is difficult to write a long review for a first-book-in-the-series, especially since I try not to give spoilers when it's the first book. But I must say that I am probably going to run out of money after I buy all the books and novellas in this series. I actually haven't ordered the next book yet... oops. I thought that I had a lot of the book left, but it was actually just bonus material. Ooooops.
I must also say that the cover of Red Queen is really pretty. I think that's the reason I bought it in the first place. I always say not to judge a book by its cover, except when book shopping. I remember being scared to buy Red Queen because I thought it was for older readers. The thing was, on that same visit to Dymocks, I also bought The Cruel Prince and Throne of Glass. So, actually, from what I can tell from the first book from the Red Queen series, I was actually wrong. The funniest thing was that I was least worried about Throne of Glass
(Speaking of ToG, I was not ready for a character in RQ to be named Evangeline.)
I'm going very off topic in this review. I'm sorry.
So, to conclude, I really enjoyed this book and am very excited to read the rest of the series, even if it is slightly stereotypical, so far.

Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard, 13+*

*This age recommendation is only my opinion. Some younger people might feel comfortable reading this book, and some older people might not. That's fine, either way. Warning for potentially upsetting themes, medium-level violence and weird kissing stuff.

  1. Interesting, I might check it out. I am currently reading V for Vendetta (because of your recommendation) and it is really good!
