This review contains spoilers for King's Cage and other preceding books in the Red Queen series.
Ok I don't know what to say. I am actually on the verge of tears. I don't know whether or not it's because of the book. I don't know how to feel about anything or anyone oh my gosh. So I'm just gonna blurt this all out in a very unstructured format. Forgive me, I only finished the book less than ten minutes ago.I swear, in my Glass Sword review I said I liked Nanny as a character. And, just like that, she dies.
SHADE. FARLEY. CLARA. WHAT ON EARTH. I WAS JUST GETTING OVER SHADE'S DEATH. THEN SUDDENLY HE HAS A DAUGHTER. Yes, it hurt, but I liked it. Farley is so so strong to be dealing with all that.
I have mixed feelings about the multiple point of view structure of this book. It was definitely necessary to the plot, I definitely preferred Mare's perspective -- so luckily most of the book was told through her perspective.
This is random but honestly I don't know why Mare hated her Arven guards so much. I mean, I know why, and she had a valid reason to hate them, but I didn't hate them that much. I was kinda sad when they died. But can we talk about the fact that "Egg" and "Trio" were named CAZ and BRECKER?! What were the chances? My brain is still trying to form a conspiracy theory behind that.
Please don't kill me, imaginary blog readers, but I have mixed feelings about Maven. I would say that I hated him more in Glass Sword and at the end of Red Queen than I did for the majority of King's Cage. He is very damaged, and I guess I just feel bad for him. Elara was brutal to him, and I think that should be considered before we blame everything on him.
Like Mare and sometimes Cal keep saying, I miss who I thought Maven was. I realised how that applies to me in real life, too. About other people. I miss who I thought that certain people were.
And... Cal. I really did like him for the majority of King's Cage, but of course that kinda got thrown out the window at the end of the book. I just have no idea how to feel about him now. I don't hate him as much as I hated Maven by any means, but Mare says it best: "The person [Farley] loved is dead, stolen by someone else. Mine chose to walk away. Chose everything I hate over everything I am. I wonder which hurts more."
I really did ship Cal and Mare, but I don't now. I don't think Cal is entitled to Mare's love anymore. Knowing YA books, Mare will probably end up with someone in the end anyway.
Mare certainly went from "I will kill him" to "let them kill each other". Brutal, Mare. Fair, though.
Kilorn is probably my fav-- waitttt I'm not going to say that. First it was Shade, then Nanny. If Kilorn dies, I will actually ensure that Victoria Aveyard is never allowed leftover pizza again.
Kilorn is such a good character though. In my opinion. He respects Mare more than almost anyone. Like, after Mare rejected him in Glass Sword he didn't abandon her, didn't pressure her into feeling anything for him, etc. Now he's looking after the Barrow family and helping everyone. He's the type of character I would 100% be friends with. I like those characters. Obviously.
Iris. Um, yeah, I don't know how to feel about her either. I'd like to mention that, when Mare met her and automatically assumed she was evil, that was the moment when I think I realised how broken Mare was. I'm not saying that Iris deserved Mare's trust or anything. But I think it's sad that Mare is immediately suspicious and hateful of everyone she meets. I also think that it's another sign that Victoria Aveyard is great at writing.
The other electricons seem cool. Tyton gives off good vibes and he has a good sense of humour. I'm hoping Mare dyes her hair purple. I think I saw a spoiler in the form of fanart where the ends of her hair were purple. I don't know about anyone else, but I REALLY want that to happen. I think that having her whole hair dyed purple would be weird, but she literally already has grey hair-ends that she could dye??
Anyway. I was actually surprised when Evangeline helped Mare out. I don't know how I feel about her, either. Of course. Or Anabel "Nanabel".
That's all I have to say... for now. I can't believe I'm already up to the last book! It looks kinda thick... which is slightly daunting. But if I read Kingdom of Ash, I can read this... right? I'm currently on school holidays, and hoping to finish the Red Queen series (or at least War Storm) by the end of the holidays. I mostly read at night, secretly? I think my dad knows I read when I should be asleep... but not how often *nervous laughter*.
But anyway, let's hope I can finish this! *cheers for myself*
King's Cage by Victoria Aveyard, 13+* ★★★★
*This age recommendation is only my opinion. Some younger people might feel comfortable reading this book, and some older people might not. That's fine, either way. Warning for potentially upsetting themes, medium-level violence, swearing, sexual references and weird kissing stuff.
