Why is everything created by Alice Oseman so amazing? Like with every other thing by Alice that I've ever seen, I really really liked Radio Silence.
I never know where to start with book reviews. So this will likely be a rant about how great this book was!
Ok so first of all, Aled!! Obviously I knew him from Heartstopper, and it was really really great to see more of him because he's such a nice character. Many people have said he's an angel and I most certainly agree. I felt like a proud parent, seeing him with friends and interests and stuff. Yay. I feel like he really transformed and changed over the course of Radio Silence.
Ok is it bad to say that it was hilarious to see Drunk Aled though? Like, I never imagined that he was that type of person. As I was reading Radio Silence, my Goodreads updates were something along the lines of "drunk aled hehe", "drunk aled uh oh" and then "drunk aled noooo". I feel like a decent amount of the plot of this book was based on Aled getting drunk. Like, look at these pictures:
And now confirm for me that this does not look like the type of person who would get so drunk that he doesn't remember anything that happened the previous night. Yeah, I dunno why I found Drunk Aled so funny. But Aled is so cool. I feel like I relate to him heaps... except he's cooler. A lot cooler. I want to be friends with him and with most of the other characters in Radio Silence. Such as Frances (who I also relate to), Daniel, and Raine. These people are too good to be true 😭 which probably makes sense because they aren't real.
Ok so the concept of Universe City is so cool, and also when you learn why it exists it's so sad yet nice. This was certainly a deep book. But if it really existed I would listen the crap out of it. It actually does kinda exist but like just the excerpts from the book. I'm still gonna listen to it haha. British accents are great. Radio Silence also seems really cool, and I would be friends with them too, if they weren't fictional on two different levels.
Honestly Radio Silence gave me vibes of Eliza and Her Monsters like a lot at first. Sometimes it was pretty similar, but in a good way, because I really liked both. I don't understand how the anonymous-then-not complication thing makes me so angsty, but it certainly does.
Ok so I also looked up fanart for Radio Silence and it's literally so good. It's not all exactly fanart because it's mainly drawn by Alice Oseman, but it's so amazing I just really like her style.
Also! There were cameos from other Osemanverse characters which were just so satisfying and great. Maybe you imaginary blog readers (I might have real blog readers -- someone's viewing my blog, but I still can't work out whether or not it's me) know the feeling you get when you understand a reference or cameo or something. It's a good feeling. Toriiiii my beloveddddd.
Honestly this book made me smile. It made me sad too, but it had a really nice ending in my opinion, and I was smiling like an idiot. Also. I was so happy for more aspec rep. Another reason to really like this book. 🖤🤍💜 Also I really ship... the ship. No spoilers here I hope.
That's another thing I really liked in Radio Silence -- the platonic relationships. I'm honestly jealous of Aled's and Frances' friendship. I want to have friends like that. The characters in the book (mostly) were so amazing and I'm gonna miss them.
I feel like this book is really sentimental and I don't know why? Yeah. Weird. I just really liked it. I might cry over it at some point.
Radio Silence by Alice Oseman, 13+* ★★★★★
*This age recommendation is only my opinion. Some younger people might feel comfortable reading this book, and some older people might not. That's fine, either way. Warning for swearing, sexual references, abusive parents and possibly upsetting themes.
