This is a very popular book, and now I can see why. It is unique, emotional, and thought-provoking. It was a great balance of historical and modern and it beautifully incorporated art and music into the story. I don't think I have fully realised yet that it's over. Even though I read this book quickly, I feel as if Addie is a lifelong friend.
Ahhhh I don't know what to write, I had so much to say but suddenly it has all just left my head.
Lots of people talk about this book having a sad ending but I don't think it was that sad honestly. As I was reading the book I thought that Addie LaRue seemed like the type of book that would have a soul-crushing ending, but it didn't really. The book had a lot of potential for being tragic, and I'm both thankful and disappointed that it wasn't. Don't get me wrong, the ending was bittersweet, but it wasn't as sad as I was expecting and I guess that disappointed me a bit.
The concept of this book was so good though. In a way Addie LaRue had elements of a stereotypical fantasy book -- a dark villain, a strong heroine and a love interest -- but I think that what made this book so unique was Addie's curse. (This isn't a spoiler it's literally written on the blurb.) The fact that Addie is forgotten by everyone she meets makes every encounter she has with humans very interesting. And sad. As I said before, I think that this book got progressively happier which surprised me.
I really liked the concept of Addie trying to make her mark on the world. I think that was a really beautiful notion. And this book reminded me how amazing life is and how much I take for granted -- like the relationships I have, and how I'm able to make a mark on the world but don't.
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is the type of book that has the power to change how people see their lives. I don’t know how to describe the book as a whole… the best adjective I can think of is “beautiful”. It was a truly beautiful book and (this might be taking it too far) I believe it is some sort of 21st Century Classic.
The book is technically adult fiction and I haven’t read much adult fiction before so maybe that’s why I’ve never read anything like it before. Maybe I should read more adult fiction then.
I still don’t think I’ve properly processed the book yet haha. It was one of those books where you forget you’re reading because it’s so well written and immersive. Addie LaRue is the type of character who will stay with you for a long time (how ironic).
This is a very short review because I’m still kinda processing it all. It was a very beautiful and unique book and I’m very glad that I read it.
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V. E. Schwab, 14+* ★★★★.75
*This age recommendation is only my opinion. Some younger people might feel comfortable reading this book, and some older people might not. That's fine, either way. Warning for sexual references and themes, attempted suicide and potentially upsetting themes.
