So I actually watched this movie first (against my will). The movie was actually pretty good so I decided to buy the book. And let me say, the movie was more loyal to the book than most book movies are. We’re talking about the book here though.
My year five class actually studied Blueback but I was in the advanced group so I studied a different book instead. Yep I’m so amazing ✨.
I recently-ish went on a trip to Ningaloo reef and spent five nights on a boat through the business Sail Ningaloo which is actually owned/run by my relative. I swam with reef sharks, stingrays, sea turtles, and hella cool fish. I also got to see humpback whales (and humpback dolphins actually) from like 20 metres away. The reef was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen in my life. There are actually no words to describe how incredible the experience was. (Not sponsored hahaha).
So what I’m getting at is that Blueback was a really important book to me because it reminded me of my time at Ningaloo.
Something I really enjoyed about the book is that it wasn’t just shouting at you, “protect the environment!” but rather was a subtle story that made you fall in love with the ocean then showed you that it was at risk. I don’t know quite how to describe this book. But it certainly found a place in my heart. I would recommend this book to everyone. Blueback is short and easy to read, but that didn’t make it any less powerful.
I know I said that I wouldn’t be comparing the book to the movie, but I’m going to now. I liked how the book was written chronologically, rather than the movie which jumped around the timeline. Yep.
The ending of the book was really bittersweet in my opinion. This book is actually packed full of emotions, which is amazing since it’s less than 200 pages long. Tim Winton did an amazing job with this book. I actually have like a queue of people who are waiting to borrow the book from me ahahahaha.
Blueback by Tim Winton, 10+* ★★★★
*This age recommendation is only my opinion. Some younger people might feel comfortable reading this book, and some older people might not. That's fine, either way. Warning for death of loved ones and descriptions of suffering marine life.
