Before the Coffee Gets Cold - Book Review

This is a really popular book. It is certainly unique and was also really sweet.
I am aware of the fact that this was actually adapted from a play, so maybe that explains a few of the faults I am about to discuss.
I'm not quite sure I liked the writing style. It was very straight-to-the-point, which suited the story at times but not at others. I feel like the book lacked emotional depth -- the characters' emotions weren't really explored in my opinion.
However, I really liked the plot. The book had a happy ending, I guess, but not in a bad way. It was really sentimental, as time travel books tend to be. But it didn't make me cry or anything. A lot of trauma happened to the characters but I didn't really feel it.
I think the setting was pretty cool, though. I'm pretty sure the whole novel is set inside the café, which creates a small group of characters who are all friends with each other. I really liked that about it. It was comforting in a way. I also liked reading a story set in Japan, because most books I read are set in the US or UK, which gets very boring after a while.
This was actually technically a collection of four short stories. My favourite two were the last two. I really liked how all the short stories all sort of connected in a way.
I can definitely see the appeal of the story -- I can understand why this could be a comfort book. I would probably watch the play haha.
