I have been waiting years to read this (I was waiting for Chain of Thorns to come out). I had a Shadowhunter chronicles phase a couple years ago, and I was happy with this book.

First of all I have to say that it was so nice seeing these books tie in with others in the same universe. Obviously this mainly meant The Infernal Devices but also lots of others, including TDA and SoBH!! It was so nice to see Will, Tessa, Jem and everyone else from TID. Literally every description of Will was spot on and captured his chaotic personality. I realised how much I missed these characters and world. The Shadowhunter universe is crafted with such detail.
I also really liked lots of the new characters. Cordelia, Lucie and the Merry Thieves are so great -- I love the dynamic between them all. I know this could be seen as controversial, but I like Alastair. Also the fact that there was a dog named Oscar Wilde... love it.
And Anna Lightwood. OH MY GOSH. SHE IS AN ABSOLUTE GODDESS. SHE IS MY IDOL. SHE IS ALSO REALLY HOT (by that I don't mean what "hot" actually means, but I can't find a better word so oof).
There is a character who I resent quite a lot. I'm not naming names because I don't wanna spoil anything. But she kinda needs to get out of my babies' lives and go manipulate someone else.
It was kinda funny because in the first half of the book I didn't know who like half the characters were. It was a little confusing because there are so many characters and I was trying to remember their names and the families they came from. I swear, the fact that both Gideon and Gabriel had kids confused me so much. But once you figure it all out, it's pretty cool because in a way the fact that there are heaps of people makes it seem more realistic.
I found that the book was a little slow at times and the chapters were long, but overall the plot was pretty good. I'm very curious to see what happens next. I am shipping some characters so hard, and I really hope that they end up together at some point. Quite a few people have to drop their current love interests and realise that certain other people are crushing on them.
One thing I realised that I didn't appreciate enough about Cassandra Clare's writing is how funny she is. There is a heap of banter between characters plus heaps of the characters just have a good sense of humor. I guess I took that for granted last time I read her books.
Another thing I really liked in Chain of Gold was the fact that the chapters had titles and excerpts from literature at the start!!! I really like when there are excerpts from other things in books.
Strangely enough, I think that's all I have to say. I really did enjoy this book! Yayyy my years of waiting are finally over.
Chain of Gold by Cassandra Clare, 14+* ★★★★
