I really enjoyed this book! I had been waiting to read this book for quite a while, because I really liked the first book in the series, and this one did not disappoint!
Hunting Prince Dracula and Stalking Jack the Ripper were really different in my opinion. I feel like SJtR was a lot more based on an actual case, which I really liked. It felt a lot more like a historical fiction than HPD, which was a lot more original in creating a case. Of course I really liked both books, however I must admit that I was a bit disappointed that Hunting Prince Dracula wasn’t based off an actual case in 1888. I appreciated the references to Vlad the Impaler of course but I found that HPD felt less like a historical fiction book, which was something I really enjoyed about SJtR. I think it was the lack of continuity that bothered me — just that the first book was based off a real case then the second one wasn’t, you know? I’m really making a big deal out of it, but it didn’t really affect my enjoyment of the book. It was just something I realised I was disappointed about.
Something I really liked about this book was the development of the relationship between Audrey Rose and Thomas. I really like their relationship. It was only today that I realised they only met months before this book took place! They’re so close and I really like that about them, even if Thomas did some pretty stupid stuff in this book. (Out of context spoiler here.) When he his under a sheet in chapter 21, I literally yelled my catchphrase, “THAT IS UNETHICAL!” That was a very idiotic move but Audrey Rose forgave him yay.
So yeah I’m very excited to see where their relationship goes in the next books. I’m so sad though, I don’t have the next book what will I do?
Obviously Audrey Rose went through a ton of trauma in Stalking Jack the Ripper, and I’m glad that the effects of that were shown in Hunting Prince Dracula. I mean, obviously I’m not happy she had to go through that but I’m glad it wasn’t just swept under the rug or anything. Unfortunately for Audrey Rose though, she went through even more in this book. I hope she is ok :(
I think that the plot twist in Hunting Prince Dracula was better than the one in Stalking Jack the Ripper because it was more surprising. I don’t know what I was expecting would happen but that was not it. The whole part of the book where the murderer was revealed was very dark. Two words: drinking straw. My goodness.
This book and series is very different to books I’ve read before, which is something I like about it. In Hunting Prince Dracula especially, I very much enjoyed the gothic elements. If any of you imaginary blog readers have recommendations of books a bit similar to this one I would be very happy to hear about them! At the moment Goodreads has a focus on horror but I have no idea where to start hahahahaha.
It’s kinda funny because if you know me in person I don’t really seem like someone who would be into horror stuff. But at moment I’m starting to get into horror type stuff. I know it’s probably beginner stuff and even I don’t find it that scary but again, I don’t know where to start. I don’t even think that the stuff that I’m calling “horror” is actually horror hahahahaha.
Funny story though, I was watching a true crime documentary about the Yorkshire Ripper with my friend (it was called The Ripper and it’s on Netflix if you’re interested but it wasn’t as good as others I’ve watched). But I kept going on about the 1888 Jack the Ripper and my friend was like “why do you know so much about Jack the Ripper” and I replied “so there’s this book…” So thank you to Stalking Jack the Ripper for giving me all that information so I looked super knowledgeable.
Anyway I just went off topic again. Hunting Prince Dracula had one of those satisfying moments where the title made sense. That is something that I really like in books. So yay.
Ok so I think that’s all I have to say about the book! I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to the next books! Also good job to me for writing this whole post from my phone instead of my laptop because I’m on holiday (hopefully that also explains the bad picture of the book here).
Hunting Prince Dracula by Kerri Maniscalco, 14+* ★★★★.5
*This age recommendation is only my opinion. Some younger people might feel comfortable reading this book, and some older people might not. That's fine, either way. Warning for sexual references, murder, violence, lots of gore and gruesome stuff, spiders, disturbing themes and potentially upsetting themes.
